Dar ninsoarea încetează, norii fug, doritul soare
Strălucește și dismiardă oceanul de ninsoare.
Iată-o sanie ușoară care trece peste văi...
În văzduh voios răsună clinchete de zurgălăi.
But at once snowing ceases, clouds depart, the sunny glow
Glittres now, caressing gently the white ocean made of snow,
Look outside, for through the valleys a light sleigh is gliding swift
While the joyful air is ringing, play-bells chiming in the drift.

Ahilyabai Holkar is widely regarded as one of the most respected rulers in Indian history. Known for her humility, administrative skill, and commitment to the welfare of her people, she governed the Malwa region during the eighteenth century with remarkable stability and integrity. Her reign is remembered as a period marked by justice, cultural patronage, and responsible governance.
Ahilyabai was born in 1725 in the village of Chondi in present-day Maharashtra. Although she did not come from a royal household, her character and intelligence attracted the attention of Malhar Rao Holkar, a prominent commander of the Maratha Empire. He arranged her marriage to his son, Khanderao Holkar.
Following the deaths of her husband and later her father-in-law, Ahilyabai assumed responsibility for the administration of the Holkar state and formally became its ruler in 1767.
From her capital at Maheshwar, Ahilyabai governed with a reputation for fairness and accessibility. Historical accounts describe her holding open court where subjects could present grievances directly to the ruler. Her administration emphasized order, moderate taxation, and the protection of trade and agriculture, helping maintain stability in a region that often experienced political upheaval during the eighteenth century.
Ahilyabai Holkar is also remembered for her extensive patronage of religious and cultural architecture throughout the Indian subcontinent. She commissioned and restored temples, dharmashalas (pilgrim rest houses), wells, and roads in numerous pilgrimage centers. Among the most notable sites associated with her patronage are temples and structures in Varanasi, Somnath, and Gaya. Through these projects she contributed significantly to the preservation and renewal of important sacred spaces.
Despite her position of authority, Ahilyabai was known for maintaining a simple and disciplined personal life. Contemporary descriptions portray her as a ruler guided by a strong sense of duty and spiritual devotion. Her leadership reflected a belief that political authority should serve the welfare of society and the protection of cultural and religious life.
For nearly three decades, Ahilyabai Holkar governed Malwa with stability and prudence. Her reign demonstrated how ethical leadership, practical administration, and compassion toward the people could coexist in a powerful and lasting model of governance.
Today she continues to be remembered as one of the most admired women rulers in Indian history. Her life and legacy stand as an enduring example of leadership rooted in justice, humility, and public responsibility.
Maria of Romania remains one of the most admired and influential figures in modern Romanian history. Known for her intelligence, compassion, and deep sense of public duty, she played a significant role in strengthening the morale and identity of Romania during a transformative period in the early twentieth century. Beyond her royal position, Maria is remembered as a humanitarian, writer, and cultural ambassador whose presence helped shape Romania’s image both at home and abroad.
Born in 1875 as Princess Marie of Edinburgh, she belonged to two prominent European royal lineages. She was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain and of Alexander II of Russia, linking her to influential royal houses of the nineteenth century. In 1893 she married Ferdinand I of Romania, then Crown Prince of Romania. Over time she embraced her adopted country with remarkable dedication, gradually becoming an important advocate for Romanian national culture and identity.
Maria’s character became particularly visible during World War I, when Romania faced profound hardship and uncertainty. Throughout the war she worked actively with medical units and visited hospitals where wounded soldiers were treated. Her presence among the injured and her consistent support for the troops earned her widespread respect and affection among the Romanian people. For many soldiers and civilians alike, she became a symbol of courage and resilience during a difficult chapter in the nation’s history.
Beyond her humanitarian work, Maria also distinguished herself as a writer and cultural figure. She authored memoirs, essays, and reflective writings that reveal her intellectual curiosity and thoughtful engagement with the political and social realities of her time. Her literary works offered insight into both royal responsibilities and broader human experiences, helping to introduce Romanian perspectives and culture to international audiences.
Maria also became known for her diplomatic influence in the years following the war. During the Paris Peace Conference, she advocated for Romania’s interests at a critical moment when the future of Europe was being negotiated. Her presence and personal diplomacy helped draw international attention to Romania’s aspirations and contributed to the broader recognition of the country’s post-war position.
What makes Maria particularly notable is the balance she embodied between strength and empathy. She demonstrated that leadership could combine determination with humanity, and that public service required both conviction and compassion. Her life illustrates how cultural awareness, courage in times of crisis, and dedication to the wellbeing of society can create a lasting historical legacy.
Today, Maria continues to be remembered not only as a royal figure but as a symbol of cultural openness, humanitarian commitment, and national pride. Her legacy endures as a reminder that leadership rooted in dignity and generosity of spirit can inspire future generations and encourage meaningful dialogue between cultures.
On the occasion of the arrival of spring, the Ahiria Intercultural Forum had the privilege of organizing a Mărțișor Celebration on 1 March 2026, bringing together distinguished members of the academic, diplomatic, and cultural community in a spirit of dialogue, reflection, and shared celebration.
The Forum was deeply honoured by the presence of Prof. Marinică Șchiopu (University of Delhi & Institutul Limbii Române), Mr. Ilie Surulescu (Second Secretary, Embassy of Romania to India), Ms. Maria Daniela Pomohaci(Romanian scholar in India) and Ms. Anca Verma, whose participation greatly enriched the occasion.
The event commenced with an illuminating address by Prof. Marinică Șchiopu, who offered valuable insights into the historical and cultural significance of the Mărțișor tradition, emphasizing its enduring symbolism of renewal, continuity, and hope.
A literary dimension was gracefully introduced through the reading of “Primăvara” by Vasile Alecsandri, capturing the poetic essence of spring and its emotional resonance. This was further enriched by the recitation of selected poems on flowers by Prof. Marinică Șchiopu, adding depth, aesthetic sensitivity, and cultural refinement to the celebration.
This was followed by a presentation by Richa Qushomi Sharma, Founder of the Forum, who introduced participants to Indian spring traditions, particularly Vasant Panchami and Saraswati Puja, drawing thoughtful intercultural parallels. Expanding the global perspective, she also briefly highlighted spring celebrations across Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Chile, underlining the shared cultural expressions of seasonal transition across diverse societies.
Further enriching the program, Prof. Pratibha Bhattacharya (University of Delhi) offered an engaging perspective on German spring traditions, contributing to the multidimensional cultural dialogue of the event.
A central feature of the celebration was the Mărțișor craft workshop, where participants actively engaged in creating traditional symbols of the festival. This interactive segment fostered both cultural appreciation and personal connection, transforming the gathering into a dynamic space of participation and exchange.
The Forum extends its sincere appreciation to Ms. Anca Verma, whose thoughtful initiative in bringing her Moldovan guests added depth, diversity, and authenticity to the celebration, further strengthening the intercultural spirit of the event.
Throughout the gathering, participants engaged in meaningful exchanges of traditions, ideas, and personal reflections, including moments of interaction in the Romanian language, thereby reinforcing the cultural and linguistic essence of the occasion.
The Ahiria Intercultural Forum expresses its profound gratitude to Prof. Marinică Șchiopu for his gracious presence, intellectual contribution, and poetic engagement during the event, as well as for his continued dedication to the promotion of Romanian language and culture at an international level. His participation lent significant academic and cultural distinction to the celebration.
The Forum also conveys its sincere appreciation to the Embassy of Romania to India for its valued support and for deputing its esteemed representative, Mr. Ilie Surulescu. His presence underscored the importance of cultural diplomacy and contributed meaningfully to strengthening Indo-Romanian cultural relations.
The event concluded with a formal expression of thanks to all guests and participants, followed by a convivial gathering over tea, coffee, and refreshments, allowing for continued dialogue in an informal setting.
This celebration stands as a reflection of the vision of the Ahiria Intercultural Forum—to cultivate spaces of meaningful intercultural engagement, foster intellectual exchange, and build enduring cultural connections grounded in mutual respect and shared human values.
The Regina Ahiria Intercultural Forum commenced its journey on 23 January 2026, initially under the name Regina Maria Intercultural Forum, with a small yet meaningful inaugural gathering.
The first program was conceived as an intimate cultural exchange, bringing together a select group of participants who shared a common interest in languages and literature. The highlight of the gathering was a multilingual poetry recital, where selected works from diverse literary traditions were presented in Romanian, Spanish, and Hindi. Among these were “Glossă” in Romanian, “Poderoso Caballero Don Dinero” in Spanish, and “Yashodhara” in Hindi, along with a selection of other poems that further enriched the literary and cultural experience.
The gathering was further honoured by the presence of Prof. Marinică Șchiopu (University of Delhi & Institutul Limbii Române), who not only participated in the literary segment with the recitation of “Glossă”, but also formally inaugurated the Forum’s website, marking a significant milestone in its foundational phase.
Despite its modest scale, the event fostered a warm and engaging atmosphere, encouraging dialogue, appreciation of diverse literary traditions, and a sense of shared cultural curiosity.
This initial gathering laid the foundation for the forum’s future activities and its evolving identity. Following this beginning, the forum was renamed as the Ahiria Intercultural Forum, reflecting a broader and more inclusive vision while continuing its commitment to intercultural dialogue.
